Deserted Eden

by Okoro Chukwunweolu

Deserted Eden is a collection of socially conscious poems that explores the realities of Nigeria, Africa, and the human condition through the lenses of memory, justice, identity, leadership, and resistance. Drawing on powerful images of deserted forests, polluted rivers, trampled flowers, wounded nations, and silenced voices, the collection confronts the contradictions of a land rich in resources yet burdened by poverty, corruption, insecurity, and inequality. It reflects on the struggles of ordinary people, the failures of leadership, the distortion of justice, and the enduring consequences of historical and contemporary oppression. At the heart of the collection is the metaphor of a "Deserted Eden"—a fertile garden where abundance exists, yet many remain excluded from its blessings. Through poems such as Mrs. Alkebulan, The Song of Silence, Alive, But Dead, Deserted Forest, The Trampled Flower, and Robbers in Agbada, the collection gives voice to grief, anger, resilience, and hope. More than a critique of society, Deserted Eden is a testimony of survival and a call to remembrance. It challenges silence, questions power, and reclaims the dignity of a people whose stories refuse to be erased. Ultimately, it is a poetic witness to a land in tension between what it has lost, what it endures, and what it still has the power to become.
